As kids Christmas seems so simple and perfect. You do the same thing every year and none of the planning is on your shoulders. You just show up, eat, get gifts, hang out with family, and do lots of laughing (maybe crying.)

As adults, it feels like everything is always changing. Or maybe that is just my family since us three sisters are still changing roles in life. Like I just got married a few years ago, before that my sister had sweet babies, and now my little sister has a very serious boyfriend. So, for us it is always changing at least.

All these changes mean new traditions and sometimes (often) wishing you could go back to being a kid with those easy traditions and simple things.

Childhood Traditions:

  • Decorating the Christmas tree together. Each of us girls had a box of ornaments that were ours, given or made and we all put up our own, reminiscing the whole time.

  • Driving around town, listening to 96.5, looking at all the lights.

  • Hanging the lights on the house as a family. I was a climber so I always had the honor of climbing the front dogwood to wrap it in lights.

  • Opening one gift on Christmas Eve. We each picked one and it was such a sweet moment with my family.

  • The magic of Santa. Santa has a special place in my heart & he is definitely real! I could write an entire piece on Santa.

New Traditions.

Trey and I are only in our 5th year of marriage and we have no babies yet so our traditions are still growing, shaping, and changing. But, right now here are our fabulous traditions.

  • We start the season off by officially observing advent. The sweetness of intentionally observing advent season and focusing on Jesus is amazing. I can’t wait to bring our future children into this tradition.

  • We decorate our home with our Louisiana/Classic Christmas theme! We put up our tree, decorate it, decorate our home, while drinking, and listening to Christmas music together. Usually stopping to dance together at some point.

  • Some ornaments, like our Alligator Santa bought on our honeymoon, we put up together.

And that is about it for new traditions right now. Everything else is still the same as it was as kids.
